About

Built by people with
the same shelf of drives.

VAMP Technologies is based in Pittsburgh, and it comes out of working video production.

We've spent more than twenty-five years shaping stories for film, television and branded content: narrative and documentary work, commercials, corporate films, social campaigns. Editing, directing, shooting, animating, running post. Most of that time we have also been the ones handling the footage, which is the part of this that matters here.

Twenty-five years is also twenty-five years of drives. A shoot wraps, the cards get dumped, the drive gets a sharpie label and goes on the shelf. Do that for a couple of decades and you have a wall of them, and the only index is your own memory. Then a client asks for the shot of the bridge from a job eighteen months ago, and you lose an afternoon plugging drives in one at a time.

Our first fix was to build our own cloud.

And it worked. A server in the corner, our footage on it, reachable from anywhere. For a while it felt like the answer.

It is not the answer, and we say that as people still running one. A machine in the corner is a machine you now maintain. It needs updates, and backups of the backups, and somebody who finds that interesting at eleven at night. We are that somebody about a third of the time.

Most producers should not have to be that person any of the time.

So VAMP is the version that doesn't ask you to.

No machine in the corner. No uploading a career's worth of footage to somebody else's building and paying rent on it forever. Your originals stay on the drives you already own, exactly where you put them, and VAMP keeps a catalog small enough to live on your laptop: every clip, its metadata, a scrubbable preview, and the words people said on camera.

The drive goes back on the shelf. You can still find everything on it.

Everything that runs on your own computer is free, for good, on every drive you own. No folder limit and no cap, because the version of this that helps is the one people actually use on the whole shelf, not the one they ration. You should get to find out whether it works on your own footage without paying anybody anything.

Sharing a catalog with your editors, AI keywording and Pro tools are a subscription, because they are the parts that run on a server of ours or spend on an AI provider, and those cost money every month whether or not we want them to. The line is simple: if it runs on your hardware, it's free. If it runs on ours, it's a subscription.

We have spent enough of our own money on storage we were not touching to want to build it this way. You never pay to store footage unless you choose to. It stays on the drives you already own; VAMP Preserve, coming soon, is for masters you want off-site.
